A Comprehensive Guide on How to Measure a Toilet Seat

Upgrading your bathroom with the luxurious comfort of a Cush'n Soft padded toilet seat is more than just a style choice—it’s about precision and proper fit.

Whether you’re replacing an old seat or upgrading for comfort, knowing how to measure your toilet seat correctly will save you time, money, and frustration.

Toilet seats come in different sizes, shapes, and styles, and getting the wrong fit can result in instability or discomfort.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through each step of the measurement process to ensure a seamless Cush’n Soft upgrade.

1. Assess the Shape of Your Toilet Seat

Toilet seats come in different shapes depending on where they are made. Identifying your seat shape is the first and most critical step in ensuring a proper fit.

Common Toilet Seat Shapes:

  • Round: Found in most traditional homes in the U.S., measures about 16–17 inches from front to back.
  • Elongated: Common in modern bathrooms, slightly larger at 18–19 inches for added comfort.
  • D-Shaped: More common in Europe, featuring a flat back and rounded front.
  • Pointed/Oval: Some European and specialty toilets have a more pointed or oval front, requiring a different seat design.

How to Measure:

  • Place a measuring tape at the centre of the bolt holes (the attachment points).
  • Extend the tape to the outer edge of the front rim of the toilet bowl.
  • Compare the measurement with the standard sizes above to determine the shape.

2. Measure the Width and Length

Once you’ve determined the shape, the next step is to measure the width and length of your toilet bowl.

Steps to Measure Correctly:

  • Width: Measure the widest part of the toilet bowl from one outer edge to the other.
  • Length: Measure from the centre of the bolt holes to the outer front edge of the toilet bowl.
  • Compare with standard sizes:
    Round: ~16.5 inches
    Elongated: ~18.5 inches
D-Shaped or European models: Measurements can vary; check manufacturer specifications.

3. Determine the Bolt Hole Spacing

The bolt hole spacing refers to the distance between the two bolt holes at the back of the toilet bowl. This is crucial because an incorrect bolt spread will make installation impossible.

Standard Bolt Spreads by Region:

  • United States: 5.5 inches (the most common measurement)
  • Europe: Ranges from 6 to 6.5 inches

How to Measure:

  • Use a measuring tape to determine the distance from the centre of one bolt hole to the centre of the other.
  • Compare with the standard measurements to ensure compatibility.

4. Check for Clearance and Special Features

Beyond the basic measurements, it’s important to check for space restrictions and special seat features.

Measure the Clearance:

  • Measure the distance from the bolt holes to the tank—this helps ensure compatibility with bidet seats or heated seats.
  • If your toilet is close to a wall or vanity, measure the space available to make sure the seat can fully open and close.

Bidet & Raised Seats:

  • Bidet attachments require extra space behind the seat for water connections.
  • Raised toilet seats for elderly or disabled users often increase the height, which can affect the lid’s ability to open fully.

What If Your Toilet Is an Older Model?

If you have an older toilet, it may not conform to modern seat sizes. Toilets from the 1970s or earlier often have unique dimensions that don’t match today’s standard sizes. Some vintage or high-end toilets may require a manufacturer-specific replacement to ensure a perfect fit.

How to Handle Older Toilets:

  • Check the brand and model—often found inside the tank lid.
  • Compare measurements carefully before buying a replacement.
  • If needed, look for custom toilet seats from plumbing suppliers or contact the manufacturer.

How do I clean my Cush’n Soft?
As a rule, the less chemicals used on your seat, the longer the vinyl will last. Using strong cleaners in the bowl of your toilet is fine, but when doing so, lift the seat into the upright position, especially when products are left in the bowl overnight.

A mixture of soapy water and a little bleach is the best option, although most spray and wipe products are also suitable. Do not use cleaners that contain phenol or are abrasive, as this will void the warranty. Do not stand on or place anything sharp or hot on your seat. Do not use ‘drop on’ child trainer seats, as they can damage the vinyl. Do not sit on the lid of your Cush’n Soft seat.

Will a Cush’n Soft seat fit my toilet?
The Standard Cush’n Soft padded toilet seat fits around 98% of all toilets. The mounting bolts on these seats can be adjusted to fit pans where the holes are from 115mm to 165mm. Some pans have hidden or blind fittings, where the bolts don’t protrude out of the bottom of the pan but tighten inside, out of sight. If this is the case with your toilet, please contact us. Can the product be customised or tailored to meet my specific preferences?
Unfortunately, the sizes and designs of our products are fixed and cannot be altered.

Can children and elderly individuals use the Cush'n Soft?
Absolutely! It’s suitable for all ages, including children and the elderly. The cushioned surface provides added comfort and can be beneficial for individuals who may have sensitive skin, mobility issues, or who require extra support while using the toilet.

Can the Cush'n Soft be used in commercial/public restrooms?
While the Cush’n Soft can be used in commercial/public restrooms, it’s important to note that these seats may require additional cleaning and maintenance due to higher usage. Some public facilities may prefer more durable and easy-to-clean options specifically designed for commercial use.
